About the book:
As a result of the Earth Summit held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro,
the Agenda 21, an action plan to improve the conditions
of the environment and to ensure the sustainable development
was signed. Due to the complex restructuring of economy
and administration the transformation countries in the former
Eastern Bloc are still at the beginning of the process which
results in the implementation of sustainability in the further
development of the society. One of the most important factors
that cause the slow pace of the implementation process is
the lack of scientifically based concepts of sustainable
use of natural resources, that simultaneously ensure the
economic wealth of the population. Of special importance
in this context are the rural cultural landscapes of Ukraine
that are characterised by agricultural use and forestry
and a high nature conservation value. They will probably
undergo severe alterations due to an increasing influence
of a global market economy.
In the frame of a multidisciplinary research-project, that
was financed by the BMBF and run under the patronage of
the UNESCO, a collective of Ukrainian and German scientists
developed sustainability concepts of rural landscapes in
the Western Ukraine. The studies were carried out in the
Upper Dnister Basin, a river system, whose fluvial topography
is representative for large parts of the Western Ukraine
and moreover for other mountainous areas of Central Eastern
Europe. Within the Upper Dnister Basin three model regions
(Carpathians, Precarpathians, Podolian Plate) were selected.
The concepts of sustainability are based on the data assessment
of e. g. natural site conditions, biodiversity, land
use systems, and sociodemography. The focus of the research
project was laid on agricultural land use, forestry and
flood regime including their economic aspects.
